Quick answer: A large pizza is usually 14 inches and 8 slices. That is the default at Domino's, Papa John's and Little Caesars. Pizza Hut is 8, sometimes 10. Extra-large (16 inch) is often 10–12 slices — not “large.”
| Chain | Large size | Typical slices | Feeds (main) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domino's | 14 inch | 8 | 3–4 |
| Pizza Hut | 14 inch | 8 (sometimes 10) | 3–4 |
| Papa John's | 14 inch | 8 | 3–4 |
| Little Caesars | 14 inch Hot-N-Ready | 8 | 3–4 |
| Domino's XL | 16 inch | 12 | 5–6 |
Large vs medium vs extra-large
US chains use diameter, not slice count, to name the size:
- Small / personal: about 10 inch, 4–6 slices. See also 7-inch pizza.
- Medium: about 12 inch, 6–8 slices.
- Large: about 14 inch, 8 slices.
- Extra-large: about 16 inch, 10–12 slices.
A 16-inch pie is not a “large” at these chains. If a search says “large pizza 12 slices,” that person is usually looking at XL or a square/party cut.
Domino's, Hut, Papa John's, Little Caesars
Domino's large = 14 inch round, 8 slices. Their extra-large is the 12-slice pie. Square pan pizzas are a different cut.
Pizza Hut large = 14 inch. Hand-tossed is commonly 8. Pan and some party cuts go to 10. Do not mix “large” with their old “Big New Yorker” / XL sizes.
Papa John's large = 14 inch, 8 slices.
Little Caesars large (Hot-N-Ready) = 14 inch, 8 slices. Deep dish / Detroit-style is still usually 8 but the pieces are square. More on Little Caesars sizes.
How many people?
Rule of thumb: 2–3 slices per adult as a meal, 1–2 if there are sides. So one large (8 slices) is 3–4 adults, or 2 if nobody is sharing salad. Two larges cover a table of 6 more comfortably than one XL.
Slice count is not calories. A 14-inch cut into 10 is smaller pieces, not more pizza. Area scales with diameter squared — a 16-inch is about 30% more pizza than a 14-inch, not “two extra slices.”
Why Google shows 8, 10, and 12
All three numbers are right for someone’s large. Chains disagree, stores recut, and “large” in the UK or at a local shop may be 12 or 13 inches. If you need a number for one order, use the table above for the big four US chains, then check the box. Related: pizza box sizes.
